End of the Golden Weather

22 Sep - 23 Sep

Sacred Heart Girls’ College Performing Arts Department proudly presents: END OF THE GOLDEN WEATHER

This has got to be one of the great New Zealand stories. As a play, it’s endured far beyond its intended lifespan. Playwright Bruce Mason wrote it partly as a platform for himself, performing the work solo across NZ in the decades for a staggering 986 performances, until his death in 1982.

The Boy believes in miracles. He sees them every day on the beach where he lives in this last perfect summer of his childhood. Despite his father's warnings, the boy becomes friends with Firpo, a strange, skinny, magical character with a burning ambition to win the Olympic Games. When Firpo accepts an impossible challenge to run a race on the beach, the boy tries everything to help him win - body building, weights, diet, even prayer. But Firpo scorns them all, convinced he will win with a miracle all his own.

The boy so much wants to believe in Firpo's miracle that he sets himself against his whole world - his family, his community and finally, against the innocent dreams of his childhood.

Set at a time of only 100 years of European settlement, and when wearing shorts on the beach is controversial, it is a different world from today, yet nostalgically familiar. The Boy’s story seems to have a wider resonance of a nation growing up.

This is a wonderful homage to another point in time and at its heart is a universal ‘coming of age’ tale about growing up, leaving childhood behind and entering adulthood.
