AVENUE Q

20 Aug - 05 Sep

Part flesh, part felt and packed with heart, Avenue Q is fast paced fun.....just like Sesame Street after a really irreverent re-write

DIRECTOR: Warren Bates

MUSICAL DIRECTOR: Phillip Malcolm

This laugh out loud musical tells the timeless story of a bright eyed college grad named Princeton.  When he arrives in New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account, he has to move into a shabby apartment all the way out on Avenue Q.

Still, the neighbours seem nice.....There he meets Kate (the girl next door), Lucy (the sl*t), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet entrepreneur), superintendent Gary Coleman (yes, that Gary Coleman) and other new friends!

Together they struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever elusive purpose in life.

Winner of the Tony "Triple Crown"for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, Avenue Q is an American musical in two acts.  It is a laugh-out-loud coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. Live actors and puppets manipulated by unconcealed puppeteers join forces in song and dance to tell the timeless story of the fresh-faced college graduate, Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q.
Despite its decidedly adult content (dealing with themes such as racism, pornography, homosexuality and schadenfreude), much of the show's ironic humour arises from its parody of Sesame Street, a metaphor of the contrasts between childhood and adulthood, and between the children's TV world and the real world.

DIRECTOR Warren Bates has just come off a highly-acclaimed season of Oscar Wilde's 'The Importance of Being Earnest' with Cue Theatre in Inglewood, and is known for his unique flair of direction in New Plymouth Operatic's productions of Godspell, Cats, The Sound of Music, Miss Saigon, The Producers, Phantom of the Opera, Sister Act and recently Les Miserables. Warren also runs his drama school Stage Centre, New Plymouth, nurturing our local young talent and preparing them for opportunities in local productions and beyond.

MUSICAL DIRECTOR Phillip Malcolm could not resist the temptation of this brilliantly hilarious show and the opportunity to work alongside Warren again. He is known as 'The Mac Guy' in New Plymouth, running his business MacTorque by day and is also studying towards a Bachelor of Aviation Management by distance with Massey University. Phillip's MD credits include The Producers, Grease, The Wedding Singer, Mamma Mia, Sister Act and recently Priscilla: Queen of the Desert with New Plymouth Operatic.

R16...Adults love Avenue Q but they seem a little, er, fuzzy on whether it’s appropriate for kids. We’ll try to clear that up.
Avenue Q is great for older teenagers because it’s about real life. It may not be appropriate for young children because Avenue Q addresses issues like sex, drinking and surfing the web for porn. It’s hard to say what exact age is right to see Avenue Q – parents should use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children. But we promise this… if you do bring your teenagers to Avenue Q, they’ll think you’re really cool!
